ACADEMIC POLICIES & PROCEDURES

The American Samoa Community College reserves the right to change policies, programs or fees, as approved by the Board of Higher Education (BHE), without previous written notice.

  • Exception Policy - allows for exceptions to deadlines, policies, or procedures for students with extenuating circumstances.
  • Academic Freedom Policy - defines the free search for truth and its free exposition.
  • Acceptable Usage Policy - Guidelines for the proper use of technology assets at ASCC.
  • Attendance Policy - lists total allowable absences and consequences of stopped/non-attendance.
  • College Credit Equivalency Program - defines other ways to obtain credit toward a degree.
    • Credit for Transfer Courses - credit for courses taken outside of ASCC.
    • Credit by Examination - credit by testing out of classes.
    • Credit for Work/Life Experience - credit toward a degree for work experience.
    • Indepentent Study - an option for students who are unable to enroll in a course due to a schedule conflict, class cancellation, program requirement change, graduation or a transfer requirement.
    • Credits Earned at Foreign (non U.S.) Colleges and Universities - credit for courses taken outside of the U.S.
    • Distance Learning Courses - credit for DLCs.
    • Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations - ASCC accepts Advanced Placement Examination scores for credit, and in some instances, placement.
  • Credit, Grades & GPA Policies - includes the following:
    • Academic Credits - outlines how credits are earned.
    • Grading System - contains a table for converting letter grades to grade points.
    • GPA Calculation - a step by step process detailing how GPA is determined.
    • Incomplete Grades - defines "I" grades.
    • Grade Report - contains information on how grade reports are obtained.
    • Change of Grade - details about how grades are changed.
    • Academic Standards - defines Good Standing, Academic Probation, 1st Suspension, and 2nd Suspension.
    • Academic Renewal - details the process for changing of previously recorded substandard academic performance.
  • Early Admission Policy - rules for enrolling in ASCC while still in high school.
  • The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) - lists student rights with respect to their educational records.
  • Sexual Harassment - defines sexual harassment and describes process for filing a grievance.
  • Student Responsibilities - includes the following:
    • Zero Tolerance Policy - lists items and behaviors that are strictly banned from campus grounds to ensure the health and safety of all students and employees of the college.
    • Academic Honesty & Integrity - defines and prohibits plagiarism, cheating, abuse of institutional materials, fraud, forgery, and theft.
  • Student Rights - includes the following:
    • General Student Grievance - details the process for students who have a grievance with the general operation of the College.
    • Academic Grievance - details the process for students who have an academic grievance.
    • Board of Retention & Dismissal - information on the board responsible for reviewing cases where a student may be dismissed.
    • Student Appeals - details the process for a student to appeal a disciplinary action taken against them.
  • Violence Against Women Act - defines domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. Also lists requirements for reporting, sexual violence education, and disciplinary actions.
  • Miscellaneous Policies - includes the following:
    • Student Right-to-Know Disclosures - policy that allows students access to completion and transfer rates of ASCC.
    • Campus Crime Statistics - reporting of all violations of the Zero Tolerance Policy above.
    • Nondiscrimination and Affirmative Actions - policy that forbids discrimination.
    • Nondiscrimination Policy - additional policy that forbids discrimination.
    • Disability Access and Reasonable Accomodation Services - policy on accomodating for students with disabilities.
    • Drug Free Policy - further outlines ASCCs Zero Tolerance Policy for drugs on campus.

  • Registration Policies - includes the following:
    • Student Academic Entry Policy - lists classes a student placed in developmental courses must complete prior to enrolling in college level courses.
    • Prerequisite Courses - important policy regarding prerequisite courses.
    • Student Credit Load - defines how many credits a student needs to enroll in to achieve full-time status.
    • Student Classification - defines Classified students, Unclassified students, Auditors, Freshmen, and Sophomores.
    • Student Status - defines Continuing, Inactive, New, Returning, New Transfer, and Unclassified students.
    • Auditing Courses - procedures and policies for auditing a course.
    • Preparatory Course Work - policy limiting enrollment for students who do not meet the placement test score requirements.

    • Textbook Policy - policy that requires the purchase of textbooks and other materials listed in the current course syllabus.
    • Textbook Information - where to get titles and ISBN numbers of required textbooks.
    • Course Classification Systems - The numbering system that classifies courses.
    • Academic Advising - The entire ASCC Faculty is committed to helping each student pursue a course of study to fulfill his/her Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.) for the future.
    • Coursework Expiration - defines when credits towards a degree expire.
  • Changes in Registration - includes the following:
    • Adds and Drops - policy on adding and dropping classes after registration.
    • Administrative Drop - a drop from a class not initiated by the student.
  • Veterans Access Fees and Tuition Policy - describes accomodations for veterans and their dependents.
  • Withdrawals - includes the following:
    • Class Withdrawal - how to withdraw from a class after the drop period is over.
    • Complete Withdrawal from ASCC - policy on leaving ASCC.
    • Unofficial Withdrawal - policy on withdrawals from classes where the student has failed to complete one of the above processes.
